Building-Integrated Solar PV and Hydrogen Energy System: Turning Buildings into Clean Energy Hubs

Our Building-Integrated Photovoltaic–Hydrogen (BIPV–Hâ‚‚) system transforms the building envelope into an intelligent platform for generating, storing and using clean energy.

Solar photovoltaic materials are integrated directly into roofs, façades, windows, canopies or building blocks, replacing conventional construction materials while producing renewable electricity. Surplus solar power is supplied to an electrolyser, which uses water to produce green hydrogen. The hydrogen can be stored for later use, providing long-duration and seasonal energy storage when solar generation is low.

How the System Works

  1. Solar energy generation
    Building-integrated PV modules convert sunlight into electricity while functioning as part of the building envelope.

  2. Smart energy management
    Electricity is used first to meet the building’s immediate demand. The control system directs surplus power to battery storage or hydrogen production.

  3. Green hydrogen production
    An electrolyser uses renewable electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen without producing carbon emissions at the point of operation.

  4. Hydrogen storage
    The hydrogen is purified, compressed and safely stored for use when required.

  5. Clean energy on demand
    Stored hydrogen can supply a fuel cell to regenerate electricity and heat. It may also support heating, mobility, industrial processes or emergency backup power.
