Professor Tapas Mallick is an internationally recognised expert in solar energy, renewable technologies and sustainable engineering, with more than 25 years of experience spanning academic research, technology development, industrial collaboration and innovation leadership.

He is Professor and Chair in Clean Technologies (Renewables) at the University of Exeter, where he leads the Solar Energy Research Group within the Environment and Sustainability Institute. He is also a co-founder and Director of BuildSolar Limited, a university spin-out company developing innovative building-integrated photovoltaic technologies.

Professor Mallick’s research covers photovoltaic technologies, building-integrated photovoltaics, solar concentrators, agrivoltaics, semi-transparent solar greenhouses, photovoltaic-thermal systems, green hydrogen, solar-resource assessment and the integration of renewable energy into buildings, agriculture and energy infrastructure. His work combines fundamental research with commercially relevant product development and real-world deployment.​
Professor Mallick is the University of Exeter’s Principal Investigator and institutional lead for the £12.5 million EPSRC Hydrogen Integration for Accelerated Energy Transitions (HiACT) Hub. Through this programme, he contributes to the development of innovative hydrogen applications supporting industrial decarbonisation, resilient energy systems and the transition to Net Zero.​
Professor Mallick has extensive experience in academic and organisational leadership. As a former Academic Lead for Renewable Energy and Director of Research, he led multidisciplinary teams, expanded research capacity, supported doctoral education and helped establish new teaching and research programmes. He also founded the MSc Renewable Energy Engineering programme at the University of Exeter, strengthening the connection between advanced research, industrial needs and professional education.
He has authored or co-authored more than 475 peer-reviewed publications and has secured or contributed to major research and innovation programmes funded by UKRI, EPSRC, Innovate UK, the European Union, the Royal Society, the British Council, government departments and industrial partners. Collectively, his research portfolio encompasses more than £15 million secured at institutional level and participation in collaborative programmes valued at over £42 million.
A central feature of his work is translating research into practical solutions. He co-founded BuildSolar Limited to commercialise Solar Squared, an innovative energy-generating glass-block technology for integration into the built environment. His wider research has supported developments in solar façades, agricultural energy systems, rural electrification, solar desalination and photovoltaic deployment in challenging climatic conditions.
Throughout his career, he has supervised 37 doctoral researchers to completion and mentored numerous early-career researchers, engineers and innovators. His international collaborations span universities, companies, governments and research organisations across the United Kingdom, Europe, India, China, the Middle East, Africa and other regions.
Professor Mallick is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Royal Society of Arts and the World Society of Sustainable Energy Technologies. He is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and holds professional affiliations with organisations including the Institute of Physics, IEEE and the International Solar Energy Society.​
His professional mission is to accelerate the transition from renewable-energy research to scalable technologies that deliver measurable environmental, economic and societal benefits.
